Limestone

About Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock mostly made up of the mineral calcite. Commonly, limestone forms in underwater environments after millions of years. The formation process lead to layers of the material becoming compacted and hardened into a solid rock.

Limestone is often used in floor tiling, countertops and table tops. This material is very durable; although, it is water absorbent. As a result, a penetrating sealer is best when sealing limestone surfaces to avoid water damage and long-lasting stains.

Cleaning Limestone Surface

Limestone is sensitive to acid so maintenance must be done with alkaline or ph neutral cleaners. We suggest using Faber 30 Deep Down Cleaner. Mop your floors clean with this solution, just like any standard detergent and rinse with plenty of water.

It is always important to clean limestone floors before applying a sealer. By doing so, you'll remove any ingrained dirt and residues from within the stone. These substances would otherwise prevent the sealer from penetrating the material and lead to less effective results.

Sealing and Protecting Limestone

Our most popular limestone sealer is Faber Limestone Densifier. A water-based sealer made specifically for limestone surfaces. It offers long-lasting, deep down protection against water and rising damp. Created to the make the limestone sanding and polishing process quick and easy.

Honing Limestone Surfaces

Honing is an important part of treating limestone surfaces.

Honing is a process to remove a minimal amount of stone from the top of the surface. In the process, it removes or smooths out scratches and ingrained soil. Honing grit is graded according to its size and the larger the grit the more stone it removes from the surface.

We recommend using SRP Hone Honing Powder for safe honing on limestone surfaces. It is suitable for walls, floors, worktops. Apply the honing powder with a Crobber Grit Brush G.
