Fancy easy cleaning solutions for BBQ garden patios without a jet washer? Let Tiling Logistics and Faber help you create a glorious garden corner. Discover the difference that Faber stone cleaning products can make in revealing the beauty and cleanliness of your grimy and algae-smothered patio paving slabs.
What different stains can you expect this summer to leave a mark on your pride and joy - garden paving or the coolest corner, the BBQ stone tiled patio? Our often-ridiculed damp climate of England creates ideal conditions for algae and moss growth, especially in shaded areas of the patio and outdoor grills. With outdoor garden rooms being popular for homeowners, the outside kitchen area and summer barbecue season often brings with it spills.- Get rid of:
- - Greasy food stains
- - Sauce
- - Wine
- - Beer
- - Algae
- - Moss
What causes stains on patio tiles? How Great British Weather Affects Stone
- It is also common for stone surfaces to become discoloured due to the presence of iron content within the material. This is especially true of terracotta, marble and sandstone. This gives way to rust on patio slabs and tiles is rust water from metal tools. Water left on tools or garden structures runs off and causes rust when they are left to wet 'n' dry in weather cycles outside.
How to remove rust and stains from stone flooring in 4 steps
- Before beginning this treatment, be sure to get rid of dirt or dust present on the surface.
- Additionally, remove any previous layer of wax on the surface. For the best wax removal treatment, refer to our double wax stripping blog.
1. Apply Faber No Rug
- It is crucial to use Faber No Rug without dilution. Pour it directly onto the slabs.
- Do not apply Faber No Rug to overly heated surfaces. It is also recommended that you apply the acidic stain remover during the coldest period of the day.
- Here, you may use a brush or spatula to apply this rust stain remover, but just pouring the solution is also acceptable.
- Cover the entire surface in a thick layer of Faber No Rug.
- For especially large surfaces, when removing efflorescence and dark oxidation, you can apply the product with a mechanical polisher.
2. Allow Faber No Rug to act
- Leave Faber No Fug to act on the surface and remove rust stains until they have been completely extracted.
- This part of the process varies in time depending on the intensity of the stain, its stubbornness, depth and how long it has been there.
- As such, we recommend testing the product in a small area to gauge the amount of time necessary to achieve desirable results.
- As a guide:
- - The removal time for pale rust stains, specifically those on compact, non-absorbent materials is typically 30-60 minutes
- - For deep, dark rust stains below the surface, predominantly on porous, absorbent materials, the removal time ranges from 1 - 4 hours
- - Finally, for deep, dark rust stains and oxidation deep within porous and absorbent materials, the removal time is around 8-24 hours
- If it takes longer to remove rust stains than this, we advise you to cover Faber No Rug in a layer of plastic or nylon sheet. To the same effect, we also recommend applying a necessary thick layer of No Rug to avoid needing to apply any more later if it dries too soon.
- This stage of the process lets the product better react with the stain instead of the surrounding area. When covering the acidic stain remover, be sure to leave it exposed for between 30 and 60 minutes after removing the sheet.
3. Remove Faber No Rug
- After the necessary amount of time, remove the deep stain remover and any residues. It doesn’t matter if they are wet or dry.
- For small surfaces, wipe the surface with absorbent paper or cloth. Remove all residue until the surface is entirely clean.
- For medium to large areas, remove all residue with a broom and absorbent rags or a damp cloth. Then, wipe the surface with a damp cloth.
4. Repeat the process
- If the final result is not acceptable, repeat the rust stain removal treatment.
- To remove rust stains that are more complex or deeper, pass over the surface with a mechanical polisher to increase surface absorption. Doing this will increase the penetration of the rust stain remover, leading to better results. The extent of stain penetrations affects the depth of polishing. For deep stains, you might need to use a grain size. This accomplishes a much deeper extraction in less time.
- Once again, we recommend performing a test to see if a mechanical polisher is necessary.

Hard water England counties: Essex, Herts, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hampshire
- These six counties consistently rank among the hardest water areas in England based on the high mineral content readings from their domestic water supplies. Addressing limescale buildup is an ongoing challenge for households in these hard water hotspots.
- Essex and Hertfordshire are two of the biggest hotspots for hard water issues due to the prevalence of chalk and limestone in the geology of those counties. Large portions of their water supply comes from the Chalk aquifer. Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire are also major hard water areas, sitting on the Chalk aquifer that runs beneath the Chiltern Hills. Cambridgeshire has hard water that originates from the Chalk and Greensand rock formations underlying most of the county.
- In Hampshire, the hard water problems stem from the limestone and chalk layers in the geology, particularly across the northern and central parts of the county.

- Home improvement projects like exterior painting run the risk of accidental paint splatters ending up on patio tiles. Other common staining culprits include oil and grease drippings from vehicle maintenance, barbeque grills, or even sunscreen lotions. Mud stains are an ever-present issue for patios frequented by children or pets tracking in dirt from the garden.
- As autumn arrives, falling leaves can leave behind unattractive brown discoloration as they decompose on the patio surface. Do remember that any metal garden furniture or structures left uncovered in winter may result in rust stains marring the appearance of your patio once spring arrives. Seasonal cleaning and maintenance is required to keep patio stones looking pristine against this barrage of potential staining offenders.
- Rust stains are inevitable, but they don't have to be unbeatable. To remove rust stains and restore the appearance of your patio, you need Faber No Rug to get rid of rust stains on acid-resistant outdoor surfaces in just 4 simple steps.
